Fully functioning bicycles with electric helper motors. Electric bikes a.k.a. "ebikes" come in various setups and qualities.
There are hub motors and mid-drive motors.
There are Ped-elec (Pedal-Assist only) bikes which the rider must always pedal and there are the more common Dual powered ebike which offer Pedal-Assist with the option of Throttle mode so the rider can cruise home after a good workout or overcome a physical weakness without the need to always pedal.
There are pedal assisted bikes with cadence sensors, torque sensors, or both.
There are also 3 popular classes of electric bicycles now; classes 1, 2, and 3.
Class 1 means a pedelec which has no throttle.
Class 2 is a speed limited ebike with a throttle ( and pedal assist) where the throttle is limited to 20 (or 22) mph.
Class 3 is an ebike which cannot propel the bike past 20mph unless the rider is pedaling. Top speed =28mph.
Class 4 bike have a motor exceeding the National wattage limit of 750w and are designated for off-road (private property) use only.
The classifications are new and not all brands designate a class at this time. And some brands really just don't care...
